On the Friday of June 25, 2021, the WHO stated in a news briefing that due to the highly contagious Delta variant of COVID-19, vaccinated people should continue to practice social distancing and wear their masks.

So as much as we want to rip our masks off like we all just performed surgeries on Grey's Anatomy, this fight is far from finished. WHO’s assistant director-general, Dr. Mariangela Simao, says, “Vaccine alone won’t stop community transmission…People need to continue to use masks consistently, be in ventilated spaces, hand hygiene…avoid crowding.”

The COVID Threat Still Remains

According to a People article written on June 23, 2021, Delta cases have doubled in the last week to 20.6%. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious diseases expert in the U.S., states in a White House briefing that he is worried about people who have yet to receive the vaccine or are unable to. He also says, “The Delta variant is currently the greatest threat in the U.S. to our attempt to eliminate COVID-19.”

Since the Delta variant continues to affect lives worldwide, we need to be wary and protect the unvaccinated people around us. The head of WHO, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, concludes that the Delta variant is “the most transmissible of the variants.”
