FDA Approves Pfizer Pediatric Vaccine for Kids Aged 5-11

A Lot Has Changed

In a media statement from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ (ACIP) recommended that kids 5 to 11 years old be vaccinated against COVID-19 with the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine. This expands the vaccine to approximately 28 million children in the U.S. 

CDC Director Rochelle P. Walensky, M.D., M.P.H., endorsed this decision. She stated, “Together, with science leading the charge, we have taken another important step forward in our nation’s fight against the virus that causes COVID-19. We know millions of parents are eager to get their children vaccinated.”

Dr. Walensky knows firsthand how scary the pandemic is for parents. “As a mom, I encourage parents with questions to talk to their pediatrician, school nurse, or local pharmacist to learn more about the vaccine and the importance of getting their children vaccinated.” 

These Are Serious Times (Still)

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration also authorized the use of the Pfizer BioNTech pediatric vaccine in a news release in late October.

Acting FDA Commissioner Janet Woodcock, M.D. said, “Vaccinating younger children against COVID-19 will bring us closer to returning to a sense of normalcy…Our comprehensive and rigorous evaluation of the data pertaining to the vaccine’s safety and effectiveness should help assure parents and guardians that this vaccine meets our high standards.”

As of early November, vaccines are available at thousands of pediatric healthcare provider offices, pharmacies, and Federally Qualified Health Centers. The most common side effect of the Pfizer-BioNTech pediatric vaccine was a sore arm. In retrospect, COVID-19 cases in children can result from long-term complications, inflammatory syndromes, hospitalizations, and even death. Like adults, vaccination was nearly 91% effective in preventing COVID-19 among children (5-11).
