The Omicron Variant is Another Reason to Wear Face Masks
Continue Wearing Masks & Stop the Spread of the Omicron Variant
New Variant Arises
The CDC and the California and San Francisco Departments of Public Health have both confirmed that a Californian contracted the omicron variant when returning from South Africa on November 22. This is the first confirmed case in the United States.
As part of a global effort to stop the spread of the heavily mutated omicron variant of COVID-19, the U.S. will restrict travel for non-U.S. citizens from South Africa, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Mozambique, and Malawi.
On November 26, President Biden issued a Proclamation on Suspension of Entry. In the recent White House statement, President Joe Biden said, “The national emergency caused by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak in the United States continues to pose a grave threat to our health and security.”
He then added, “As of November 26, 2021, the United States has experienced more than 47 million confirmed COVID-19 cases and more than 773,000 COVID-19 deaths. It is the policy of my Administration to implement science-based public health measures… to act swiftly and aggressively to prevent further spread of the disease.”
There’s No Such Thing as Too Cautious
The travel ban decision came less than three weeks after the administration lifted pandemic travel restrictions on travelers from over 30 countries, including South Africa. The U.S. had exempted Malawi, Namibia, Mozambique, and 51 other countries from the vaccine requirement because of low availability.
As of now, Canada, the European Union, and the U.K. all have restrictions on visitations from southern Africa. Biden told CNBC reporters, “I’ve decided we’re going to be cautious…We don’t know a lot about the variant except it is a great concern, seems to spread rapidly.”
Additionally, the World Health Organization referred to lineage B.1.1.539 (omicron) as a “variant of concern.” Maria Van Kerkhove, the WHO’s technical lead on Covid-19, said, “We don’t know very much about this yet. What we do know is that this variant has a large number of mutations. And the concern is that when you have so many mutations, it can have an impact on how the virus behaves.”
Continue to Get Vaccinated & Wear Masks
Viruses constantly change through mutation, thus, can sometimes result in a new variant that may either disappear or persist. Unfortunately, new COVID-19 variants will continue to emerge as long as people go unvaccinated and don’t wear masks.
Because of all this, it is no surprise that Biden is urging already vaccinated Americans to get their booster shots along with urging parents to vaccinate children ages 5 to 11.
The CDC stated, “The recent emergence of the Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) further emphasizes the importance of vaccination, boosters, and general prevention strategies needed to protect against COVID-19. Everyone 5 and older should get vaccinated, and boosters are recommended for everyone 18 years and older.”
